The first georgian wine vlogger - Gio Potskhverashvili

Wine Video Blogger – an individual who creates and shares videos on wine-related topics on carious online platforms or social media channels. The blogger uses his videos to inform and entertain his audience about various aspects of wine.

Although we are the homeland of wine, we have one wine video blogger, but one that all wine countries would envy. Giorgi Potskhverashvili has been a wine Vlogger for 4 years and continues to work successfully on many platforms.

T: when was your first professional contact with wine?

I have been in connect with wine since childhood, before I myself became directly interested in wine.

My mother is a winemaker, so wine as a product was always at home and I consumed it daily.

The birth of my love for wine happened much later in the 3rd year, when I went to Germany on an exchange program, where I saw myself in this profession from a different angel, and this is where my love for this profession began.

T: what was the inspiration and how did you decide to become a video blogger?

Inspiration, as symbolic as it may sound, the first video blog in the world was Wine Library TV – I had the idea that Georgia should definitely have it, to be the first video blogger. I worked on the content for 2 years to get the knowledge and emotion to handle this job. In 2019, I uploaded the first video.

T: How did Georgian winemaking receive your videos and how much does Georgian winemaking need a wine blogger?

In general, when you start a social life, you should be prepared that someone will not like something, there will be a lot of negativity and resistance. Motivation is enough to start something, but to do it for a long time you need discipline. It took me a long time to understand all this.

In General, in Georgian, it is no accepted to speak honestly about wine, so as not to break each other’s hearts, which in my opinion is quite a big problem.

Even the approach of the winemaker, who puts out a good wine, tries to replicate the good wine in the following years and does not try to make a better one. However, we need to adapt every year. We do not have this approach massively.

I really do not have the attitude that some winemakers have about wine. I will become a better blogger when there is another person on the market who can speak as emotionally and honestly as I do or better.

I think that not one but ten blogger are not enough in Georgia, because there are many problems that we should talk about, therefore I welcome the appearance of more bloggers, people talk about wine and create healthy competition in this field.

T: what is your approach to wine tasting and reviewing?

In General, the criterion for wine evaluation was and is the European wine evaluation method of classic winemaking. A major part of which is again Geissheim’s credit. There we had tastings with the world’s leading sommeliers, and I learned a lot by listening to these people. I also had that period that so many of my viewers are having now – “aww, what fashion fruit” or “what a cherry pie” – but this is temporary and will pass soon.

There is a moment in wine when people are free to influence each other. It is a separate issue that you stand firmly on the perception you have, so that you do not fall under someone’s influence. It is easy to explain to people who want to.

Like everything else, mood is very important. Everyone should also know well that the perception of every wine is individual. However, there are “dogmatic” issues – what aromas red or white wine can have. Everyone is free to interpret. Any flavor is very individual, for some it is mango and for some it is ripe peach. It is easy to explain to people if they want to.

T: how do you explain to someone what wine is?

Wine is unique, the most complex drink, which can have almost everything that exists in nature. We must understand that we live in an interesting world, in which wine is the drink that can perceive and convey everything back.

Wine can give you emotion, the voltage that you need for a person to express himself, it is necessary to talk, wine is a product that loves to talk, to share.

A person who is a professional in this field observes everything, what he drinks, what he eats, and the ingredients. Any aroma can be felt, even freshly laid asphalt. You just need a little faith in the beginning.
