Tamar Zakalashvili Talks About the WINTOUR Master's Experience

The International Master on Wine Tourism Transitions and Innovations (WINTOUR) is a prestigious and highly regarded program in the field of wine tourism. This educational program involves studying at three leading European universities—Tarragona, Bordeaux, and Porto - and combines viticulture, enology, marketing, and wine tourism. It is designed for individuals who wish to gain in-depth knowledge of the wine industry.

For WINTOUR 2024, Georgia is represented by Tamar Zakalashvili, a graduate of the Viticulture and Enology bachelor's program at the Agricultural University of Georgia and a former master's student at the Georgian Technical University.

What has Tamar's journey in the wine industry been like, and what does the WINTOUR master's program entail? Tboba spoke with Tamar Zakalashvili to learn more.

T: Tamar, how did your journey with wine begin?

My love for wine started in childhood. I vividly remember the taste of wine made by my grandfather. My main motivation to engage professionally in winemaking came from my sister, Tekle Zakalashvili. During my bachelor's studies in Viticulture and Enology at the Agricultural University, I went on an exchange program to Geisenheim. Later, I pursued a master's degree at the Georgian Technical University and participated in another exchange program in Sicily. These experiences were instrumental in shaping my career, and I am immensely grateful to those universities.

Throughout my studies, I actively worked as a sommelier and in various wineries, including 8000 Vintages, Winery Vaziani, Giuaani, and Alcorium. Currently, I am in Spain, studying in the WINTOUR master's program.

T: What inspired you to apply for the WINTOUR master's program?

I first learned about this program during my bachelor's studies. I remember being captivated by its diversity: wine, wine tourism, marketing, three countries, funding - it's the kind of opportunity that comes only once in a lifetime.

My particular interest in wine tourism was shaped by my varied work experiences, and I decided to apply for this program.

T: What makes the WINTOUR program special?

The program's structure focuses on viticulture, marketing, and tourism, offering students a broad perspective on the industry. Every Wednesday, the entire group visits different wineries, significantly enhancing practical knowledge and experience. Additionally, it’s a great opportunity to establish valuable professional connections.

T: Any advice for those considering applying to WINTOUR?

In my opinion, diverse work experience and focusing on a single area isn’t enough. I suggest carefully examining the type of students they select and tailoring your application to align closely with the program's requirements. Along with work experience, additional certifications and foreign language skills are essential. Be proactive and don’t fear challenges - it takes multitasking to reach your goals.

T: Future plans:

My dream is to develop wine tourism in Georgia. I believe this field still holds significant untapped potential.

Wine tourism in Georgia has a great opportunity to showcase Georgian wine on the global market by leveraging knowledge and experience.
