Loco por Vino - bringing Georgian winemaking traditions with the world

Loco por Vino was founded by André and Karla, a passionate team dedicated to exploring the world’s wine cultures. Their goal is to bring awareness to unique winemaking traditions, particularly in Georgia. Through travel, tastings, and local collaborations, they aim to introduce authentic Georgian wines to an international audience.

T: How did the journey of Loco por Vino begin?

Our story began as the natural evolution of a 15-year journey through the world of wine and gastronomy. We first met while working together in the kitchen and since then, our journey has taken us to over 100 countries, where we immersed ourselves in local wine cultures, often volunteering at wineries in Italy, Portugal, Turkey, and Germany. But we always felt something was missing – a wine region that rarely appeared in major wine education resources like WSET.

In 2023, we decided to move here to dive deep into the local traditions and work alongside the people to learn the authentic techniques that have been passed down through generations.

We have partnered with Wine7 Trade, the first importer since 2017 to establish operations of Georgian wines in Brazil. This collaborations has played a pivotal role in introducing and promoting our brand in Brazilian market.

T: Which regions or wineries did you visit, and how did these experiences shape your understanding of Georgian wine?

We had the privilege of visiting nearly every wine region in the country, from Kakheti and Imereti to Adjara and Ratcha. The experience was both eye-opening and enriching – each area has its own character and unique winemaking traditions, and we were able to taste grapes and wines that were unfamiliar even to experienced wine professionals. The knowledge shared by local winemakers allowed us to approach our selection process with greater insight and confidence, enabling us to carefully curate and present Georgian wine with both authenticity and mastery.

T: What aspects of Georgian wine culture and traditions have left a lasting impression?

What really impressed us was how deeply wine is woven into Georgian culture. The Qvevri method, where wines ferment in clay vessels buried underground, is fascinating.

Additionally, wine here isn’t just an industry; it’s a way of life. Many families have their own Marani (wine cellar), and the Supra tradition of feasting, where wine is central, reflects how Georgians use wine to celebrate life.

T: From your perspective, what makes Georgian wine especially appealing to an international audience?

Georgian wine stands out for its unique terroir and winemaking style, particularly the Qvevri method, which imparts depth and complexity. The structure and acidity of Georgian wines make them highly versatile with food, and the sense of heritage they carry resonates with people globally. They offer a new experience, which is very appealing.

By focusing on quality, while highlighting the rich cultural heritage and authenticity of Qvevri wines, Georgian winemakers can carve out a lasting presence in the global wine market.

T: Looking ahead to 2025, what’s on the horizon for Loco por Vino?

We want to put Georgia on the map for Brazilian consumers as the birthplace of wine and we plan to participate in major event like Wine South America and ProWine. While continuing to bring renowned Georgian chef Guram Baghdoshvili to cook traditional dishes in various Brazilian cities.

Our goal is not just to introduce more Georgian wines into the market but to create a cultural and educational bridge between Brazil and Georgia.
