My name is Lana Shaishmelashvili, and I am currently studying International Wine Business at Geisenheim University in Germany.
How and why did I get here?
While studying viticulture and winemaking at the Agricultural University, I joined the Erasmus exchange program, which brought me to Germany for a year. The knowledge and experience I gained here convinced me to stay and switch my focus to International Wine Business.
Why did I choose this profession?
Wine has always been a part of my life, as my family made it annually, like many Georgian families. My love for wine stems from childhood, combined with my roots in Kakheti and my desire to contribute to Georgian culture and traditions.
My first independent winemaking experience?
At 22, I had the opportunity to independently manage a harvest in Germany, thanks to my university connections. I worked at an 8-hectare vineyard and winery, producing Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir. Though romantic in description, the experience was physically demanding but invaluable.
My goal?
I aim to bring my accumulated knowledge back to Georgia and promote Georgian wine, starting with Germany. Increasing awareness and imports of Georgian wine is one of my primary objectives.
What is Georgian winemaking lacking?
In my opinion, more effort and knowledge are needed in viticulture, sales, and marketing. Quality wine starts with healthy grapes, and we must invest more energy into this.
Advice for aspiring professionals?
Gain as much hands-on experience as possible in different countries, build connections, and, most importantly, taste as many wines as you can. Wine without communication and tasting is unimaginable in this field.
