Clay Wine Contest 2024

For the first time in the world, the UK will host a Clay Wine Contest, a competition for winemakers who age or ferment their wines in clay vessels. Their wines will be evaluated by leading Masters of Wine and sommeliers.

The event will take place in Edinburgh on November 24, followed by a session in London on November 28, where Masters of Wine, sommeliers, wine merchants, and representatives from import companies will be in attendance. The judging of the wine samples will be held in December, and winning wines will receive electronic labels.

“Interest in wines aged in qvevri and other clay vessels is growing in Michelin-starred restaurants, wine bars, and boutique shops. However, sommeliers and buyers still face challenges in tasting and selecting these unique wines on a single platform. With the support of Masters of Wine and experts, we created this event to provide a platform for better evaluation of wines aged in clay vessels,” says Mako Abashidze.

“The idea for the competition emerged when we discovered Georgian qvevri wine and its production methods. We traveled to Georgia, Armenia, Portugal, and Spain, witnessing how winemakers strive to preserve traditional methods while adapting to modern trends. Our enthusiasm to create a larger platform for wines aged in clay was solidified through conversations with Masters of Wine, leading to this competition,” shares Tatiana Mann.

“Clay amphora wines combine ancient techniques with modern winemaking. This competition was created to honor these wines and their producers, to appreciate the challenges, diversity, and authenticity that these winemakers bring,” adds Isobel Salamon.

The Clay Wine Contest will significantly raise awareness of these unique wines aged in clay, elevating the winemaking tradition to a higher level. It offers a space to deepen understanding and appreciation for wines crafted using traditional methods.

Participation is open to any producer who ages wine in clay vessels. Participation is free, and the deadline for sample submissions is November 8, with three bottles required for each wine type. For more information, contact: info@80-20shops.co.uk
